Acne Treatment for Oily Skin: Daily Skincare and Prevention
Having oily skin exposes you to higher risk of acne outbreak, and this is why proper acne treatment for oily skin is important. People with oily skin have bigger pores, which mean that their skin oil production is also higher than people with normal or dry skin. This makes dirt and makeup reside clog easily in the pores, and can cause acne breakout if not cleansed properly. While the best OTC acne treatment products are available widely, it is important to treat your skin properly if you have oily and acne-prone skin.
Acne Treatment for Oily Skin: Proper Daily Steps
When you have acne, you need to put extra attention to how you treat your skin. Here are steps you can do for daily acne skincare (especially when you are having acne outbreak):
- Wash face at least twice a day.
You must wash your face at least after waking up and before bed. In the morning, you wash off the excess oil that your skin produces when you are sleeping. After being active all day long, you need to wash your face again before bed to get rid of accumulated dirt, oil and makeup. Use mild facial foam instead of cream-based product, so you can get rid of dirt and oil without putting extra burden on your skin.
- Always have spot treatment gel handy.
If you have oily skin, it is easy to experience sudden pimple or zit. Spot treatment gel is great to treat this zit quickly, especially if the pimple is red and painful or if you need to always look your best. Spot treatment for oily skin usually comes in the form of gel instead of cream or lotion, and even the cheap one works wonder. It may not eliminate pimple overnight, but it can drastically lessen its appearance.
- Use astringent.
If your skin is very oily, you may use astringent as daily skincare for oily skin. Astringent is basically toner that can temporarily reduce the size of your pores. You can apply astringent on your skin when you feel that your skin produces more oil than usual, or when you have acne breakout, in order to speed up the healing process. Astringent should be applied on clean skin using clean cotton ball. When you experience acne breakout, you can apply astringent that contains salicylic acid over it.
- Don’t use harsh scrubbing product.
While occasional scrubbing may be good to clean skin, harsh and frequent scrubbing can cause redness and irritation. It can also make your acne breakout to worsen. Scrubbing should only be done when your skin is free of pimples. Also, when you buy scrubbing product for your oily, acne-prone skin, choose the mild product. Use it only occasionally, such as one a week or once every two weeks.
- Wear light, hypoallergenic makeup.
Ideally, you should not burden your oily skin with makeup, especially if you are experiencing breakout. However, what if you need to look your best? Use light makeup that don’t put extra burden on your skin. Choose light or hypoallergenic products that suit your skin, and wear as few layers as possible (BB cream, which is a combination between foundation and moisturizer, can be a great choice). Don’t forget to pick product that has UV protection factor.
Finally, while cleansing face is important, excessive use of facial cleanser or facial foam can dry out your skin. If you wake up in the morning with light sheen of oil, you can try washing your face with warm water but without any facial product, but use facial foam after a long day and before bed.
Proper acne treatment for oily skin will help you healing your pimples even if your oily skin makes outbreak easier to appear.
